1. Meaning & Scope of Geomorphology

Geomorphology is the scientific study of landforms, their origin, evolution and spatial distribution. It explains the relationship between endogenic and exogenic forces shaping the Earth’s surface.

Importance for Exam:
  • High weightage in Paper-I
  • Conceptual + diagram-based questions
  • Direct linkage with disasters & environment

2. Origin of the Earth

Major Theories

  • Nebular Hypothesis – Kant & Laplace
  • Planetesimal Hypothesis – Chamberlin & Moulton
  • Tidal Hypothesis – Jeans & Jeffreys
  • Modern Big Bang Theory
Exam Tip: Simple comparison table fetches more marks than long text.

3. Interior of the Earth

Layers of the Earth

  • Crust – Continental & Oceanic
  • Mantle – Upper & Lower Mantle
  • Core – Outer (liquid) & Inner (solid)

Sources of Information

  • Seismic waves (P & S waves)
  • Meteorites
  • Volcanic materials
  • Gravity & magnetic studies
Diagram Mandatory: Earth’s interior cross-section.

4. Plate Tectonics – Core Concept

Plate Tectonic Theory explains continental drift, mountain building, volcanism and earthquakes through movement of lithospheric plates over the asthenosphere.

Types of Plate Boundaries

  • Divergent – Mid-ocean ridges
  • Convergent – Subduction & collision
  • Transform – Lateral movement

Major Plates

  • Pacific Plate
  • Eurasian Plate
  • Indo-Australian Plate
  • African Plate
  • North & South American Plates
Exam Value: Link plate boundaries with earthquakes & volcanoes.

5. Continental Drift vs Plate Tectonics

  • Continental Drift – Alfred Wegener
  • Plate Tectonics – Modern explanation
  • Plate tectonics explains mechanism
  • Continental drift lacked force explanation
UPSC Trend: Critical comparison questions are common.

6. Isostasy (Basic Introduction)

Isostasy refers to gravitational balance between Earth’s crust and mantle.

  • Airy’s Model
  • Pratt’s Model
Application: Mountain uplift & erosion balance.

7. Answer Writing Strategy (Geomorphology)

  • Start with definition
  • Add labelled diagram
  • Use keywords (plates, mantle, convection)
  • End with application (disasters / relief features)

Golden Rule: One diagram = +2 to +4 marks advantage

PYQ Orientation

  • Plate tectonics & earthquakes
  • Criticism of continental drift
  • Earth interior & seismic waves
