1. Meaning of Atmospheric Circulation

Atmospheric circulation refers to the large-scale movement of air caused by unequal heating of the Earth’s surface. It redistributes heat and moisture and controls global and regional climate.

Exam Importance: Very frequent questions + strong monsoon linkage

2. Atmospheric Pressure Belts

Major Pressure Belts

  • Equatorial Low Pressure Belt (0°)
  • Sub-tropical High Pressure Belts (30° N & S)
  • Sub-polar Low Pressure Belts (60° N & S)
  • Polar High Pressure Belts (90° N & S)

Pressure belts shift northward and southward with the apparent movement of the Sun.

Diagram Mandatory: Global pressure belts with latitudes

3. Planetary Winds

(a) Trade Winds

  • Blow from subtropical highs to equatorial low
  • NE trades in Northern Hemisphere
  • SE trades in Southern Hemisphere

(b) Westerlies

  • Blow from subtropical highs to sub-polar lows
  • Dominant in mid-latitudes

(c) Polar Easterlies

  • Cold, dry winds from polar highs

4. Coriolis Force

Coriolis force is an apparent force caused by Earth’s rotation, deflecting winds to the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the left in the Southern Hemisphere.

Importance: Controls wind direction and ocean currents

5. Seasonal & Local Winds

(a) Monsoon Winds

  • Seasonal reversal of winds
  • Driven by differential heating of land & sea

(b) Land & Sea Breezes

  • Daily wind systems
  • Important for coastal climates

(c) Mountain & Valley Breezes

  • Local topography-controlled winds

6. Jet Streams

Jet streams are narrow, fast-flowing air currents in the upper troposphere, moving from west to east.

Types of Jet Streams

  • Sub-tropical Westerly Jet (STJ)
  • Polar Front Jet (PFJ)

Indian Context: STJ withdrawal and TEJ onset influence monsoon

7. Walker & Hadley Circulation

  • Hadley Cell – tropical circulation
  • Ferrel Cell – mid-latitude circulation
  • Polar Cell – polar circulation

Walker circulation operates longitudinally and is linked with ENSO.

8. Climatic & Indian Relevance

  • Control of rainfall patterns
  • Monsoon onset & withdrawal
  • Influence on cyclones & storms

GS Link: Monsoon, climate change, extreme events

9. Answer Writing Strategy

  • Begin with definition
  • Draw global wind & pressure diagram
  • Use keywords: Coriolis, ITCZ, jet stream
  • Link with Indian monsoon

Golden Rule: Pressure belt + wind diagram = top marks

PYQ Orientation

  • Pressure belts & wind systems
  • Role of jet streams in monsoon
  • Hadley & Walker circulation
