GEOGRAPHY OPTIONAL – PAPER I

PAGE 6 : AEOLIAN LANDFORMS

UPSC / UPPSC Geography Optional

1. Meaning of Aeolian Processes

Aeolian processes refer to the action of wind in shaping landforms through erosion, transportation and deposition, mainly in arid and semi-arid regions.

Exam Importance: Short questions + compulsory diagrams

2. Conditions Favoring Wind Action

  • Arid or semi-arid climate
  • Sparse vegetation
  • Loose, dry surface material
  • Strong and persistent winds
Examples: Thar Desert, Sahara, Australian deserts

3. Aeolian Erosion

Processes of Wind Erosion

  • Deflation – removal of loose particles
  • Abrasion – sandblasting of rocks

Erosional Landforms

(a) Deflation Hollows

  • Depressions formed by removal of sediments

(b) Mushroom Rocks (Pedestal Rocks)

  • Narrow base, broad top
  • Due to maximum abrasion near ground

(c) Yardangs

  • Long, narrow ridges
  • Aligned with wind direction

Diagram Tip: Simple labelled sketches fetch full marks.

4. Transportation by Wind

  • Suspension – fine dust
  • Saltation – sand grains hopping
  • Surface creep – rolling of coarse particles

5. Aeolian Deposition

(a) Sand Dunes

  • Barchans – crescent shaped dunes
  • Seif dunes – longitudinal dunes
  • Transverse dunes
  • Parabolic dunes
Important Feature: Windward side gentle, leeward side steep (slip face)

(b) Loess Deposits

  • Fine wind-blown silt
  • Highly fertile
  • Example: China, Rhine valley

6. Desert Landscape Evolution

  • Initial erosion → deposition dominance
  • Formation of desert plains
  • Role of episodic rainfall
Concept: Deserts are not entirely erosional landscapes.

7. Indian Context

  • Thar Desert – dunes & wind erosion
  • Desertification in Rajasthan
  • Impact on agriculture & settlements

GS Link: Land degradation & climate change

8. Answer Writing Strategy

  • Define aeolian process
  • Draw 1–2 simple diagrams
  • Add Indian or global example
  • Conclude with environmental relevance

Golden Rule: Neat dune diagram = guaranteed marks

PYQ Orientation

  • Barchans vs Seif dunes
  • Role of wind in desert landscapes
  • Loess deposits significance
