1. Introduction to Climate Classification

Climate classification is the systematic arrangement of different climatic regions based on temperature, precipitation and seasonal characteristics.

Among various classifications, Köppen’s classification is the most widely accepted due to its simplicity and vegetation linkage.

Exam Importance: Very high – direct & indirect PYQs

2. Basis of Köppen Classification

  • Mean monthly temperature
  • Mean annual precipitation
  • Seasonal distribution of rainfall
  • Natural vegetation as indicator

Köppen used alphabets to represent major climate groups.

3. Major Climate Groups

(A) Tropical Climates

  • High temperature throughout the year
  • Mean monthly temperature above 18°C

Types

  • Af – Tropical Rainforest (Amazon)
  • Am – Tropical Monsoon (India)
  • Aw – Tropical Savanna (Sudan)

(B) Dry Climates

  • Evaporation exceeds precipitation

Types

  • BW – Desert Climate (Sahara)
  • BS – Steppe Climate

(C) Warm Temperate (Mesothermal) Climates

  • Mild winters, warm summers

Types

  • Cf – Marine West Coast (UK)
  • Cw – China Type
  • Cs – Mediterranean Climate

(D) Cold Snow Forest (Microthermal) Climates

  • Severe winters
  • Large annual temperature range

Types

  • Df – Cool Temperate
  • Dw – Siberian Climate

(E) Polar Climates

  • Extremely low temperatures

Types

  • ET – Tundra Climate
  • EF – Ice Cap Climate

4. Köppen Symbols Explained

  • First letter – Major climate group
  • Second letter – Rainfall pattern
  • Third letter – Temperature detail

Example: Am = Tropical Monsoon Climate

5. Indian Climate under Köppen

  • Am – Tropical Monsoon (most of India)
  • Aw – Savanna (Central India)
  • BS – Steppe (Rajasthan margins)
  • ET – Himalayan highlands

GS Link: Indian monsoon, agriculture & vegetation

6. Merits of Köppen Classification

  • Simple and practical
  • Vegetation-based
  • Global applicability

7. Limitations

  • Overgeneralisation
  • Ignores wind & pressure
  • Static classification

8. Answer Writing Strategy

  • Begin with definition
  • Write classification table
  • Add world map diagram
  • Use Indian examples

Golden Rule: Köppen world map sketch = topper advantage

PYQ Orientation

  • Explain Köppen classification
  • Indian climate under Köppen
  • Merits and limitations
