PAGE 16 : OCEAN–ATMOSPHERE INTERACTION & UPWELLING

UPSC / UPPSC Geography Optional

1. Ocean–Atmosphere Interaction

Ocean–atmosphere interaction refers to the continuous exchange of heat, moisture and momentum between the ocean and the atmosphere.

This interaction plays a decisive role in regulating global climate, weather systems and monsoon circulation.

Exam Importance: Very high – conceptual + ENSO-based PYQs

2. Mechanisms of Interaction

  • Heat exchange (sensible & latent heat)
  • Moisture transfer (evaporation & precipitation)
  • Momentum transfer (winds driving currents)

Warm oceans energise the atmosphere, while cold oceans stabilise it.

3. Role of Sea Surface Temperature (SST)

  • Controls evaporation rate
  • Influences pressure systems
  • Drives monsoon circulation

Example: Warm SST in Indian Ocean strengthens monsoon

4. Upwelling – Meaning

Upwelling is the vertical movement of cold, nutrient-rich deep ocean water to the surface, usually caused by wind action.

Key Concept: Upwelling enhances marine productivity.

5. Causes of Upwelling

  • Offshore movement of surface water
  • Coriolis force
  • Ekman transport
  • Coastal wind systems

Diagram Mandatory: Coastal upwelling diagram

6. Major Upwelling Regions

  • Peru–Chile coast (Humboldt Current)
  • California coast
  • West African coast
  • Somali coast (seasonal)

7. Upwelling & Fisheries

  • Nutrient-rich waters boost plankton growth
  • High fish concentration
  • World’s major fishing grounds coincide with upwelling zones

Example: Peru fisheries (anchovies)

8. ENSO & Upwelling

  • Normal years: Strong upwelling off South America
  • El Niño years: Suppressed upwelling
  • La Niña years: Enhanced upwelling

Impact: El Niño severely affects fisheries

9. Indian Ocean Context

  • Seasonal upwelling along Somali coast
  • Influences Indian monsoon rainfall
  • Affects Arabian Sea fisheries

GS Link: Blue economy, food security, climate variability

10. Climatic Significance

  • Heat redistribution
  • Control of cyclones
  • Regulation of global climate

11. Answer Writing Strategy

  • Define interaction / upwelling clearly
  • Draw simple upwelling diagram
  • Link ENSO with fisheries
  • Add Indian Ocean example

Golden Rule: Upwelling diagram + ENSO link = top marks

PYQ Orientation

  • Ocean–atmosphere interaction
  • Upwelling and fisheries
  • ENSO impact on marine productivity
