1. Meaning & Scope of Climatology

Climatology is the scientific study of climate, its elements, controls and spatial distribution over long periods of time. It explains weather patterns, climate zones and climatic variability.

Exam Importance: Very high weightage + GS-I & GS-III overlap

2. Composition of the Atmosphere

Permanent Gases

  • Nitrogen – 78%
  • Oxygen – 21%
  • Argon – 0.93%

Variable Gases

  • Carbon dioxide
  • Water vapour
  • Ozone

Dust Particles

  • Act as condensation nuclei
  • Influence cloud formation & rainfall

Importance: Controls heat balance and precipitation

3. Structure of the Atmosphere

(a) Troposphere

  • Lowest layer
  • All weather phenomena occur here
  • Temperature decreases with height

(b) Stratosphere

  • Contains ozone layer
  • Temperature increases with height

(c) Mesosphere

  • Cold layer
  • Meteors burn here

(d) Thermosphere

  • Very high temperature
  • Ionised gases (Ionosphere)

(e) Exosphere

  • Outermost layer
  • Very thin gases

Diagram Mandatory: Vertical structure of atmosphere

4. Ozone Layer & Its Significance

  • Located in stratosphere
  • Absorbs harmful UV radiation
  • Protects life on Earth

Issue: Ozone depletion due to CFCs

Global Response: Montreal Protocol

5. Atmospheric Pressure

Atmospheric pressure is the weight of air exerted on the Earth’s surface.

Factors Affecting Pressure

  • Temperature
  • Altitude
  • Water vapour

Importance: Controls wind movement and weather systems

6. Vertical Distribution of Pressure

  • Pressure decreases with height
  • Rapid decrease near surface
  • Gradual decrease at higher altitudes

Concept: Pressure gradient force initiates wind

7. Indian Context

  • Ozone depletion impact on health
  • Air pollution in troposphere
  • Pressure systems influencing monsoon

GS Link: Climate change, environment, disasters

8. Answer Writing Strategy

  • Begin with definition
  • Use neat labelled diagrams
  • Link concepts with climate phenomena
  • Add current relevance (ozone, pollution)

Golden Rule: Atmospheric structure diagram = guaranteed marks

PYQ Orientation

  • Structure of atmosphere
  • Role of ozone layer
  • Vertical temperature distribution
