1. Meaning of Atmospheric Moisture
Atmospheric moisture refers to the presence of water vapour in the atmosphere. It plays a crucial role in cloud formation, precipitation and weather phenomena.
Exam Importance: Direct questions + monsoon relevance
2. Humidity
Types of Humidity
- Absolute Humidity – actual water vapour content
- Specific Humidity – mass of water vapour per mass of air
- Relative Humidity – ratio of actual to maximum moisture
Relative humidity is the most commonly used measure in weather analysis.
3. Condensation
Condensation occurs when moist air is cooled below its dew point temperature, leading to the formation of water droplets.
Conditions for Condensation
- Cooling of air
- Presence of condensation nuclei
- Sufficient moisture
4. Clouds
Classification of Clouds
(a) High Clouds
- Cirrus
- Cirrostratus
- Cirrocumulus
(b) Middle Clouds
- Altostratus
- Altocumulus
(c) Low Clouds
- Stratus
- Stratocumulus
- Nimbostratus
(d) Vertical Clouds
- Cumulus
- Cumulonimbus
Exam Tip: Vertical cloud diagram is highly scoring.
5. Precipitation
Forms of Precipitation
- Rainfall
- Snowfall
- Sleet
- Hail
Types of Rainfall
- Convectional Rainfall
- Orographic Rainfall
- Cyclonic (Frontal) Rainfall
Diagram Mandatory: Orographic rainfall diagram
6. Indian Context
- Southwest monsoon rainfall
- Orographic rainfall on Western Ghats
- Convectional rainfall in summers
GS Link: Monsoon, floods, droughts
7. Extreme Events
- Cloudbursts
- Intense rainfall episodes
- Urban flooding
Climate Change Link: Increased moisture holding capacity of air
8. Answer Writing Strategy
- Define humidity / precipitation
- Use classification tables
- Add simple cloud diagrams
- Link with Indian monsoon
Golden Rule: Cloud classification table + diagram = full marks
PYQ Orientation
- Types of rainfall
- Cloud classification
- Humidity concepts
