1. Meaning of Coastal Processes

Coastal and marine processes refer to the action of waves, tides, currents and marine organisms in shaping coastal landforms through erosion, transportation and deposition.

Exam Importance: Very frequent questions + strong GS linkage

2. Marine Erosion

Agents of Marine Erosion

  • Hydraulic action
  • Abrasion
  • Attrition
  • Solution

Erosional Landforms

(a) Sea Cliffs

  • Steep rock faces along coast
  • Formed by wave undercutting

(b) Wave-cut Platforms

  • Flat rocky surfaces
  • Formed at cliff base

(c) Sea Caves, Arches & Stacks

  • Caves → Arches → Stacks sequence

Diagram Tip: Cave–Arch–Stack–Stump sequence fetches full marks.

3. Marine Transportation

  • Longshore drift
  • Onshore & offshore currents
  • Tidal currents

Transportation redistributes sediments along coastlines.

4. Marine Deposition

(a) Beaches

  • Deposits of sand & shingle
  • Dynamic equilibrium with waves

(b) Spits

  • Elongated sand deposits
  • Formed by longshore drift

(c) Bars & Barrier Islands

  • Offshore sand ridges
  • Protect lagoons

(d) Lagoons

  • Shallow coastal water bodies

5. Coral Reefs

Types of Coral Reefs

  • Fringing reefs
  • Barrier reefs
  • Atolls

Corals are sensitive to temperature, salinity and water depth.

Example: Great Barrier Reef, Lakshadweep

6. Coastal Classification

  • Submergent coasts
  • Emergent coasts
  • Neutral coasts
Examples: Indian east coast (emergent), fjord coasts (submergent)

7. Indian Coastal Landforms

  • Western Coast – rocky, steep, estuaries
  • Eastern Coast – wide plains, deltas
  • Andaman & Nicobar – coral reefs

GS Link: Coastal erosion, cyclones, sea level rise

8. Coastal Hazards & Climate Change

  • Sea level rise
  • Coastal erosion
  • Cyclones & storm surges
Relevance: Disaster management & coastal regulation

9. Answer Writing Strategy

  • Start with definition
  • Draw neat diagrams
  • Add Indian examples
  • Link with climate change

Golden Rule: One diagram + one Indian example = high marks

PYQ Orientation

  • Coral reefs formation
  • Spits & bars formation
  • Coastal erosion causes
