1. Insolation – Meaning
Insolation refers to incoming solar radiation received by the Earth’s surface. It is the primary source of heat energy that drives atmospheric and climatic processes.
Exam Importance: Core concept + frequent PYQs
2. Factors Affecting Insolation
- Angle of incidence (latitude)
- Duration of sunshine
- Transparency of atmosphere
- Distance between Earth and Sun
- Cloud cover & dust
Key Concept: Vertical rays = maximum insolation
3. Distribution of Insolation
- Maximum at equator
- Decreases towards poles
- Seasonal variation due to axial tilt
Diagram Tip: Earth–Sun relationship (solstices & equinoxes)
4. Heat Budget of the Earth
Heat budget refers to the balance between incoming solar radiation and outgoing terrestrial radiation.
Components of Heat Budget
- Incoming shortwave radiation
- Reflected radiation (albedo)
- Absorbed radiation
- Outgoing longwave radiation
Important: Global heat balance maintains temperature stability.
5. Albedo
- Albedo is reflectivity of Earth’s surface
- Ice & snow have high albedo
- Forests & oceans have low albedo
Climate Relevance: Melting ice → lower albedo → more warming
6. Temperature Distribution
(a) Horizontal Distribution
- Isotherms show equal temperature
- Land heats faster than water
- Continents show extremes
(b) Vertical Distribution
- Temperature decreases with height
- Normal lapse rate: 6.5°C per 1000 m
7. Inversion of Temperature
Temperature inversion occurs when temperature increases with height instead of decreasing.
Causes
- Radiation inversion
- Subsidence inversion
- Valley inversion
Impact: Fog, smog, air pollution
8. Global & Indian Context
- Urban heat islands
- Heat waves in India
- Climate change & warming trends
GS Link: Disasters, environment, climate policy
9. Answer Writing Strategy
- Define insolation / heat budget clearly
- Add neat diagram (Earth–Sun / heat balance)
- Use keywords: albedo, lapse rate
- Conclude with climate relevance
Golden Rule: Heat budget diagram = high scorer
PYQ Orientation
- Factors affecting insolation
- Heat budget explanation
- Temperature inversion causes
