1. Introduction to Oceanography

Oceanography is the scientific study of oceans, including their physical, chemical, biological and geological characteristics.

Oceans cover about 71% of Earth’s surface and play a crucial role in climate regulation.

Exam Importance: High – frequent conceptual & diagram-based questions

2. Major Divisions of the Ocean Floor

(a) Continental Shelf

  • Shallow, gently sloping submerged land
  • Rich in fisheries and minerals
  • Average depth: up to 200 m

(b) Continental Slope

  • Steep descent from shelf edge
  • Marked by submarine canyons

(c) Continental Rise

  • Gentle slope formed by sediment deposition

(d) Deep Sea Plain (Abyssal Plain)

  • Flattest and deepest part of ocean floor
  • Covered by fine sediments

(e) Oceanic Trenches

  • Narrow, deep depressions
  • Associated with subduction zones
  • Example: Mariana Trench

Diagram Mandatory: Cross-section of ocean relief

3. Submarine Features

  • Mid-Oceanic Ridges
  • Seamounts
  • Guyots
  • Submarine plateaus

These features are closely linked with plate tectonics and volcanism.

4. Temperature of Ocean Water

Ocean temperature varies horizontally and vertically depending on latitude, depth and currents.

5. Horizontal Distribution of Temperature

  • Highest near equator
  • Decreases towards poles
  • Affected by ocean currents

Example: Gulf Stream warms Western Europe

6. Vertical Distribution of Temperature

(a) Surface Layer

  • Warm, well-mixed layer

(b) Thermocline

  • Zone of rapid temperature decrease

(c) Deep Ocean Layer

  • Cold and uniform temperature

Diagram Tip: Thermocline curve diagram fetches full marks

7. Factors Affecting Ocean Temperature

  • Latitude
  • Ocean currents
  • Season
  • Winds
  • Depth

8. Indian Ocean – Special Features

  • Warmest ocean
  • Seasonal current reversal
  • Strong monsoon influence

GS Link: Monsoon, cyclones, marine resources

9. Answer Writing Strategy

  • Begin with definition
  • Draw ocean relief diagram
  • Use thermocline sketch
  • Add Indian Ocean example

Golden Rule: One relief diagram + one thermocline diagram = high score

PYQ Orientation

  • Ocean floor relief
  • Thermocline significance
  • Indian Ocean characteristics
