Weekly Current Affairs – Page 11

UPSC Prelims | Static + Current Affairs
Concepts • Facts • Intelligent Elimination

🔹 HOW UPSC PRELIMS QUESTIONS ARE FRAMED

UPSC Prelims does not test isolated facts. It tests a candidate’s ability to connect current affairs with static concepts and apply intelligent elimination.

Most questions are designed to:

  • Confuse similar terms
  • Mix correct and incorrect statements
  • Test conceptual boundaries

📌 1️⃣ POLITY – CONSTITUTION & GOVERNANCE

Prelims Pointers:

  • Difference between constitutional and statutory bodies
  • Powers vs functions of constitutional authorities
  • Articles frequently linked with current debates

Likely Focus Areas:

  • Article 51 – International peace and cooperation
  • Article 368 – Constitutional amendments
  • Fundamental Rights vs Reasonable Restrictions

Elimination Tip:

UPSC often uses absolute words like “only”, “always”, “entirely” — treat them with caution.

📌 2️⃣ ECONOMY – TERMS & CONCEPTUAL CLARITY

Economic current affairs usually test conceptual understanding rather than data.

Important Concepts:

  • Inflation vs stagflation
  • Fiscal deficit vs revenue deficit
  • Capital expenditure vs revenue expenditure

Prelims Trick:

If a statement mixes two correct concepts wrongly, it is usually incorrect.

📌 3️⃣ ENVIRONMENT – CONCEPT + CONTEXT

Environment questions increasingly link current issues with core concepts.

Focus Areas:

  • Climate mitigation vs adaptation
  • Carbon sinks and sequestration
  • Biodiversity hotspots and ecosystem services

Elimination Logic:

UPSC rarely asks direct definitions; it tests application and limitations.

📌 4️⃣ SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY – APPLICATION BASED

Prelims questions focus on uses, advantages, and limitations, not technical processes.

Important Areas:

  • AI and digital governance
  • Space technology applications
  • Biotechnology and ethics

Common Trap:

Statements that exaggerate capabilities of new technology are usually wrong.

📌 5️⃣ INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS – BASICS ONLY

IR questions are limited but tricky. They focus on:

  • Objectives of international organisations
  • India’s position in global groupings
  • Treaties linked with current events

🧠 PRELIMS STRATEGY – HOW TO USE THIS PAGE

  • ✔ Revise once every 3–4 days
  • ✔ Convert each bullet into a question
  • ✔ Practice statement-based elimination
  • ✔ Avoid rote memorisation

✍️ QUICK PRACTICE (SELF-TEST)

Consider the following statements:
1. All constitutional bodies are created by Parliament. 2. Climate adaptation focuses on reducing emissions. 3. Capital expenditure always increases fiscal deficit.

Which of the statements given above are correct?
