Indian Geography – Page 8

UPSC GS-I | GS-III | Indian Geography
Environmental Geography & Vulnerability of India

🔹 WHY ENVIRONMENTAL GEOGRAPHY MATTERS

Environmental geography examines the interaction between human activities and natural systems. India’s diverse physiography and high population density make it one of the most environmentally vulnerable countries.

UPSC increasingly integrates environment, climate change, disasters, and sustainability.

🌿 1️⃣ MAJOR ENVIRONMENTAL REGIONS OF INDIA

  • Himalayan Region: Fragile ecosystem, landslides, glacier retreat
  • Indo-Gangetic Plains: Air pollution, groundwater depletion
  • Peninsular Plateau: Deforestation, mining stress
  • Coastal Regions: Cyclones, erosion, sea-level rise
  • Arid & Semi-Arid Regions: Desertification, drought

🔥 2️⃣ CLIMATE CHANGE & REGIONAL VULNERABILITY

Climate change acts as a threat multiplier intensifying existing environmental stresses.

Major Impacts:

  • Increase in heatwaves
  • Erratic monsoon patterns
  • Rising frequency of extreme rainfall
  • Intensification of cyclones

India’s agriculture, water security, and coastal livelihoods are highly vulnerable.

🌊 3️⃣ DISASTER-PRONE AREAS OF INDIA

Flood-Prone Regions:

  • Brahmaputra and Ganga basins

Cyclone-Prone Areas:

  • Eastern coast (Bay of Bengal)

Earthquake-Prone Zones:

  • Himalayan belt
  • North-East India

Urban areas are increasingly exposed due to unplanned development.

🌱 4️⃣ BIODIVERSITY & ECOLOGICAL HOTSPOTS

India is one of the world’s megadiverse countries, hosting diverse flora and fauna.

Biodiversity Hotspots:

  • Western Ghats
  • Eastern Himalayas
  • Indo-Burma Region
  • Sundaland (Nicobar Islands)

Conservation is essential for ecological stability and human well-being.

⚖️ 5️⃣ ENVIRONMENTAL GOVERNANCE & WAY FORWARD

  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
  • National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC)
  • Disaster Risk Reduction strategies
  • Community-based conservation

Balancing development and environment requires ethical governance and scientific planning.

🧠 INTEGRATION WITH OTHER GS PAPERS

  • Environment ↔ Agriculture & food security
  • Climate change ↔ Internal security
  • Disasters ↔ Governance & ethics
  • Ecology ↔ Sustainable development

✍️ PRACTICE QUESTIONS

1. Discuss the environmental vulnerabilities of India with suitable examples. (10 marks)
2. Examine the impact of climate change on India’s ecological and economic security. (15 marks)
