Indian Geography – Page 3

UPSC GS-I | Indian Geography
River Systems & Drainage Pattern of India

🔹 SIGNIFICANCE OF RIVERS IN INDIAN GEOGRAPHY

Rivers are lifelines of Indian civilisation. They influence settlement patterns, agriculture, culture, trade, and political boundaries.

For UPSC, rivers must be studied as dynamic geomorphic systems, not merely as water channels.

🌊 1️⃣ DRAINAGE SYSTEM OF INDIA

The drainage system of India is broadly classified based on the destination of river waters.

Major Drainage Basins:

  • Arabian Sea drainage
  • Bay of Bengal drainage
  • Inland drainage

Nearly 77% of Indian rivers drain into the Bay of Bengal, while about 23% flow into the Arabian Sea.

🏔️ 2️⃣ HIMALAYAN RIVER SYSTEM

Himalayan rivers are perennial in nature, fed by both monsoon rainfall and snowmelt.

Major Himalayan Rivers:

  • Indus System
  • Ganga System
  • Brahmaputra System

Characteristics:

  • Long courses
  • Large drainage basins
  • High erosional capacity in upper reaches
  • Formation of extensive floodplains

Significance:

  • Highly fertile alluvial plains
  • Major irrigation potential
  • Support dense population

Mains Angle:
“Himalayan rivers are both a boon and a challenge for India.” Discuss.

⛰️ 3️⃣ PENINSULAR RIVER SYSTEM

Peninsular rivers are mostly rain-fed and follow relatively shorter and fixed courses.

Major Peninsular Rivers:

  • Godavari
  • Krishna
  • Kaveri
  • Mahanadi
  • Narmada
  • Tapi

East-flowing Rivers:

  • Longer courses
  • Delta formation
  • Drain into Bay of Bengal

West-flowing Rivers:

  • Short courses
  • Estuary formation
  • Drain into Arabian Sea

🌾 4️⃣ ROLE OF RIVERS IN AGRICULTURE & ECONOMY

Rivers support agriculture through:

  • Irrigation
  • Soil fertility
  • Floodplain agriculture

They also contribute to:

  • Hydroelectric power
  • Inland navigation
  • Industrial water supply

⚠️ 5️⃣ CHALLENGES ASSOCIATED WITH INDIAN RIVERS

  • Floods in Himalayan rivers
  • Droughts in peninsular rivers
  • Inter-state water disputes
  • Pollution and ecological degradation

Climate change and unsustainable water use have intensified these challenges.

🧠 INTEGRATION WITH OTHER TOPICS

  • Rivers ↔ Monsoon variability
  • Drainage ↔ Soil distribution
  • Rivers ↔ Urbanisation and water stress
  • River disputes ↔ Federal governance

✍️ PRACTICE QUESTIONS

1. Compare Himalayan and Peninsular river systems of India. (10 marks)
2. Discuss the economic and ecological significance of river systems in India. (15 marks)
