📝 GS-I MAINS – MODEL ANSWER 1
Q. “The physiographic divisions of India have played a decisive role in shaping its climate, drainage and human settlement patterns.” Discuss. (250 words)
Answer:
India’s physiographic diversity ranging from the Himalayas to coastal plains has fundamentally shaped its climate, drainage system and settlement patterns. These physical features influence atmospheric circulation, river regimes and resource availability.
The Himalayan mountain system acts as a climatic barrier, blocking cold continental winds and facilitating monsoonal rainfall. It also gives rise to perennial rivers such as the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra, which sustain extensive floodplains. These fertile plains support dense populations and intensive agriculture.
The Peninsular Plateau, composed of ancient crystalline rocks, determines the course of most peninsular rivers. Its mineral richness has supported industrial development, while its rain-fed rivers have shaped regional water availability and cropping patterns.
Coastal plains enable maritime trade, fishing and port-based urbanisation, while island territories enhance India’s strategic and ecological significance. In contrast, arid regions like the Thar Desert have sparse population due to climatic constraints.
Thus, India’s physiographic divisions are not merely physical features but dynamic systems that shape climatic processes, drainage patterns and socio-economic development.
📝 GS-I MAINS – MODEL ANSWER 2
Q. Examine the role of the Indian monsoon in sustaining agriculture and the economy. (150 words)
Answer:
The Indian monsoon is the backbone of the country’s agrarian economy. Nearly three-fourths of annual rainfall occurs during the south-west monsoon, directly influencing agricultural productivity, water availability and rural livelihoods.
A timely and well-distributed monsoon ensures successful kharif crops, replenishes groundwater, and supports hydro-power generation. Conversely, monsoon failure leads to droughts, food inflation and economic slowdown.
The monsoon also affects industrial output, energy demand and fiscal stability. Climate change has increased monsoon variability, making adaptation and resilient agriculture crucial for economic sustainability.
📝 GS-I MAINS – MODEL ANSWER 3
Q. “River systems in India are facing serious ecological stress.” Analyse the causes and suggest measures. (250 words)
Answer:
Indian river systems are under severe ecological stress due to population pressure, industrialisation and climate change. Unsustainable extraction of water for irrigation and urban use has reduced river flows, especially in peninsular rivers.
Pollution from untreated sewage, industrial effluents and agricultural runoff has degraded water quality. River regulation through dams and embankments has disrupted natural sediment flow, aquatic biodiversity and floodplain fertility.
Climate change has intensified floods and droughts, further stressing river ecosystems. Inter-state water disputes also complicate river basin management.
Measures such as integrated river basin management, pollution control, environmental flow norms, community participation and climate-resilient planning are essential to restore river health and ensure long-term water security.
