🟢 Question (15 Marks)
“The Quit India Movement of 1942 was a watershed moment in the Indian freedom struggle.” Critically examine.
(Answer in about 200–220 words)
✍️ Model Answer
Introduction
The Quit India Movement, launched in August 1942 under Mahatma Gandhi’s leadership, was the final mass uprising against British rule demanding immediate independence. It marked a decisive shift from negotiation to irreversible resistance.
Body
The movement was a watershed for several reasons. First, it demonstrated unprecedented mass participation across regions and social groups, reflecting political maturity among Indians. Second, its spontaneous and leaderless nature showed that nationalism had penetrated deep into society. Third, British repression during the movement destroyed the moral legitimacy of colonial rule, as governance increasingly relied on force rather than consent.
However, the movement had limitations. The absence of central leadership led to localized violence, and it did not immediately force British withdrawal. Economic disruption and administrative breakdown also affected civilians.
Despite these shortcomings, the movement fundamentally altered British perceptions. Post-1942, it became clear that India was ungovernable without Indian cooperation.
Conclusion
Thus, Quit India was a watershed not because it achieved instant freedom, but because it made British rule politically and morally untenable, paving the way for independence in 1947.
