🟢 Question (15 Marks)
“Women’s participation transformed the Indian freedom struggle from a political movement into a social revolution.” Discuss.
(Answer in about 200–220 words)
✍️ Model Answer
Introduction
Women’s participation added a powerful social dimension to the Indian freedom struggle. By entering public politics in large numbers, women challenged colonial authority as well as entrenched patriarchal norms.
Body
Women participated actively across phases of the national movement. During Gandhian movements, they led picketing of liquor shops, boycotts of foreign goods, and courted arrest in large numbers. Leaders such as Sarojini Naidu and Aruna Asaf Ali symbolised this visible leadership, while countless ordinary women sustained the movement at the grassroots.
Women’s participation broadened the social base of nationalism. It linked political freedom with social reform by questioning gender inequality, promoting education, and redefining women’s roles within society. The Quit India Movement further witnessed women leading underground networks and parallel administrations, reflecting political maturity.
However, women continued to face social constraints, and post-independence political representation remained limited. Yet, their involvement permanently altered public perceptions.
Conclusion
Thus, women’s participation transformed the freedom struggle into a social revolution, ensuring that independence was not merely a transfer of power, but a step towards social transformation.
