GS–III MAINS – Answer Writing Strategy

(Examiner’s View | UPPSC & UPSC)

Shaktimatha 369 Learning

1. How an Examiner Evaluates Your Answer

An examiner primarily evaluates answers on the following five parameters:

  • Relevance to the question
  • Logical structure and clarity
  • Depth and multi-dimensional analysis
  • Use of examples and current relevance
  • Balanced and forward-looking conclusion

Complex language or excessive data without linkage does not fetch extra marks. Clarity and relevance are more important than quantity.

2. Ideal Answer Structure

For 10-Mark Questions (150 Words)

  • Introduction – 2 to 3 lines
  • Body – 2 to 3 dimensions
  • Conclusion – 1 to 2 lines

For 15–20 Mark Questions (250 Words)

  • Introduction with context
  • Core analysis (4–6 dimensions)
  • Way forward / Conclusion

3. Writing a Strong Introduction

You may use any one of the following approaches:

Definition-Based

Economic security refers to the ability of a nation to safeguard its economic interests and ensure stable livelihoods for its citizens.

Context-Based

In recent years, India has faced multiple challenges related to climate change, economic slowdown and internal security.

Issue-Based

Climate change has emerged as a major developmental and security challenge for India.

Avoid lengthy historical backgrounds unless specifically asked.

4. Body: Thinking Like a Topper

GS–III answers should be multi-dimensional. Try to cover:

  • Economic dimension
  • Social dimension
  • Environmental dimension
  • Technological dimension
  • Security / Governance dimension

This approach demonstrates analytical depth and earns higher marks.

5. Importance of Subheadings

Subheadings improve readability and help examiners quickly identify key points.

Example:

  • Economic Challenges
  • Environmental Concerns
  • Institutional Issues

Well-structured answers score better than long paragraphs.

6. Use of Examples & Current Affairs

Use 1–2 relevant examples such as:

  • Government schemes
  • Committees or reports
  • Recent policy initiatives

Avoid excessive statistics. Relevance matters more than data overload.

7. Diagrams & Flowcharts

Simple diagrams can enhance answers, especially in:

  • Disaster management cycle
  • Climate change impact chain
  • Economic or supply chain linkages

Even rough diagrams are acceptable if they convey the idea clearly.

8. Writing a Strong Conclusion

Way Forward Method

Strengthening governance, technology adoption and inclusive policies is the way forward to address GS–III challenges.

Optimistic Ending

With an integrated and forward-looking approach, India can effectively address its developmental and security challenges.
