UPSC / UPPSC | Shaktimatha 369 Learning
1️⃣ Why Maps Are Mandatory in Geography Optional
- Fetch extra marks instantly
- Show spatial understanding
- Save words & time
- Impress examiner visually
Fact: Even an average answer becomes a good answer with a neat map.
2️⃣ Golden Rule of Map Drawing
- Map must be recognisable, not perfect
- Neat > artistic
- Labels matter more than beauty
3️⃣ Step–1: Draw India Outline (30 Seconds Method)
Simple Memory Trick:
- Start with a slanted “S” shape for western coast
- Curve gently down to Kanyakumari
- Go up straight on the eastern side
- Add a small bulge for North-East
✔ Don’t worry about accuracy ✔ Practice daily on rough paper ✔ Same outline every time
4️⃣ Step–2: Decide the Purpose of the Map
Before drawing, ask:
- Is it physical?
- Is it climate?
- Is it economic?
- Is it disaster / political?
Rule: Draw only what the question demands.
5️⃣ Step–3: Add 4–6 Core Features Only
Examples:
- Physiography → Himalayas, Plateau, Plains
- Rivers → Ganga, Brahmaputra, Godavari
- Climate → Monsoon arrows
- Disasters → Cyclone / flood zones
Warning: Overcrowded maps lose marks.
6️⃣ Step–4: Label Like an Examiner Wants
- Horizontal labels only
- Use ruler or steady hand
- Write clearly, not small
- Keep labels outside map if needed
7️⃣ Step–5: Link Map with Answer
Correct way:
- “As shown in the map…”
- “The highlighted region indicates…”
Map without explanation = decoration Explanation without map = missed opportunity
8️⃣ Most Important Maps to Master (Must Practice)
- India physiographic divisions
- River systems
- Monsoon paths
- Flood / cyclone / earthquake zones
- Industrial & mineral regions
- Border & strategic locations
9️⃣ Time Management in Exam
- Outline map: 30–40 seconds
- Labelling: 30 seconds
- Total map time: 1 minute max
🔟 Final Map Mantra
Think → Draw → Label → Explain → Conclude
