Q6. Examine the role of wind as a geomorphic agent in arid regions. Discuss the major erosional and depositional aeolian landforms.

Directive: Examine + Discuss (Process-oriented)

Introduction

In arid and semi-arid regions, wind acts as the dominant geomorphic agent due to sparse vegetation, low rainfall and loose surface materials. Aeolian processes play a significant role in shaping desert landscapes.

Main Body

1. Aeolian Erosional Processes

  • Deflation: Removal of loose particles by wind
  • Abrasion: Sand-blasting effect on rock surfaces

2. Aeolian Erosional Landforms

  • Deflation hollows: Shallow depressions
  • Ventifacts: Faceted stones shaped by wind abrasion
  • Yardangs: Streamlined ridges carved by wind
  • Mushroom rocks: Narrow base due to intense abrasion near ground

3. Aeolian Depositional Processes

  • Deposition occurs when wind velocity decreases
  • Sand accumulates in obstacles and sheltered areas

4. Aeolian Depositional Landforms

  • Barchan dunes: Crescent-shaped, common in Thar Desert
  • Seif dunes: Longitudinal dunes aligned with wind direction
  • Loess: Fine wind-blown silt deposits (China, Europe)

5. Indian Context

  • Thar Desert shows extensive dune systems
  • Human activities accelerate desertification
  • Wind erosion affects agriculture in Rajasthan

Conclusion

Aeolian processes dominate arid landscapes, creating distinctive erosional and depositional features. Understanding desert geomorphology is essential for managing land degradation and desertification.

Diagrams to draw in exam:
• Barchan dune and Seif dune
• Yardang formation
• Mushroom rock

Examiner’s View:
✔ Clear process–landform linkage
✔ Indian examples add relevance
✔ Use of correct terminology boosts score
✔ Diagrams are decisive in aeolian questions
