Settlement Geography studies the spatial distribution, structure, functions and evolution of human settlements.

Settlements reflect interaction between humans and environment and form a core area in UPSC MAINS.

  • Rural settlements – Agriculture-based
  • Urban settlements – Non-agricultural, industrial & service-based

The rural–urban continuum explains gradual transformation of settlements.
