UPSC / UPPSC | Shaktimatha 369 Learning
Q10. Discuss the factors of soil formation. Examine the major soil types of India and the problem of soil degradation.
Directive: Discuss + Examine (Static + Applied)
Introduction
Soil is a dynamic natural body formed through the interaction of rocks, climate, organisms, relief and time. It forms the foundation of agriculture and terrestrial ecosystems.
Main Body
1. Factors of Soil Formation (CLORPT)
- Climate: Temperature and rainfall influence weathering
- Organisms: Vegetation and microbes enrich soil nutrients
- Relief: Slope affects drainage and erosion
- Parent material: Determines mineral composition
- Time: Degree of soil profile development
2. Major Soil Types of India
- Alluvial soil: Fertile, found in river plains
- Black soil: Cotton soil of Deccan Plateau
- Red soil: Iron-rich, low humus
- Laterite soil: Leached soil in high rainfall regions
- Arid soil: Sandy soils of Rajasthan
3. Soil Degradation in India
- Erosion: Wind and water erosion
- Salinisation: Excessive irrigation
- Nutrient depletion: Overuse of chemical fertilisers
- Desertification: Land degradation in arid zones
4. Conservation Measures
- Contour ploughing and terracing
- Afforestation and shelter belts
- Balanced fertiliser use
- Watershed management
Conclusion
Soil is a non-renewable resource on human timescales. Sustainable soil management is essential for food security, ecological balance and rural livelihoods.
Diagrams to draw in exam:
• Soil profile (A–B–C horizons)
• Distribution of soil types in India
• Processes of soil erosion
Examiner’s View:
✔ CLORPT framework fetches marks
✔ Indian examples are compulsory
✔ Conservation adds applied dimension
✔ Diagrams increase answer value
