Introduction

Phonetics isn’t just about sounds — it’s about music in your speech.

When you master Diphthongs, your English gains rhythm, melody, and natural flow — just like native speakers of the UK or USA.

 Telugu Explanation (with Phonetics):

డిప్థాంగ్స్‌ అంటే — ఒక vowel నుండి ఇంకో vowel కు సాఫ్ట్‌గా మారే శబ్దం (oka vowel nundi inkō vowel ku sāphṭ-gā mārē śabdam).

ఉదాహరణ: “time,” “boy,” “out” అనే పదాలలో మనం రెండు vowel sounds వింటాం.

What Are Diphthongs?

A Diphthong is a combination of two vowel sounds pronounced together in one syllable.

It gives words a “glide” — a smooth movement from one sound to another.

 Telugu Phonetic:

డిప్థాంగ్ అంటే రెండు vowels కలిసి ఒక సిల్లబల్‌లో ఉంటాయి (reṇḍu vowels kalisi oka sillabal-lō uṇṭāyi).

List of English Diphthongs (8 Main Sounds

IPA Symbol Example Word(s) Telugu Phonetic (ఉచ్చారణ) Practice Tip

/aɪ/ my, time, fly మై (mai) / టైమ్ (ṭaim) Open mouth for 'a' then glide to short 'i' — practice: my, mine, might
/ɔɪ/ boy, toy, enjoy బాయ్ (bāy) / టాయ్ (ṭāy) Round lips for first sound, then move to 'ee' — say “bo-ee” smoothly
/aʊ/ now, house, out నౌ (nau) / హౌస్ (haus) Start with 'a' open sound then glide to 'u' — practice in pairs: now / cow
/əʊ/ (UK) / /oʊ/ (US) go, show, road గో (gō) / హోమ్ (hōm) Round lips and glide from neutral vowel to 'o' — practice: go / home / road
/ɪə/ here, ear, idea హియర్ (hiyar) / ఇయర్ (iyar) Start with short 'i' then move to 'uh/er' — good for British RP: here → /hɪə/
/eə/ air, care, fair ఏర్ (ēr) / కేర్ (kēr) Start with 'e' / 'a' then glide to 'uh/er' — practice: air / hair / care
/ʊə/ tour, sure (note: less used in modern accents) టూర్ (tūr) / షూర్ (shūr) Start with 'u' then slide to 'uh/er' — many speakers now say 'tour' like /tʊr/

Accent Tip — Gliding Smoothly

When you pronounce diphthongs, glide the tongue smoothly from the first vowel to the second — don’t stop halfway.

 Example:
“time” = start with /a/ and glide to /ɪ/ → /aɪm/

Telugu Phonetic:
మాట మధ్యలో ఒక్కసారిగా ఆపకుండా సాఫ్ట్‌గా మారాలి (oka sāriga āpakuṇḍā sāphṭ-gā mārāli).
